IN THE HEART OF TUSCANY
The commune of Vinci is situated on the slopes of the hills of Montalbano, place of election for the cultivation of vineyards and olive groves from which produces high quality wines and oils.
The medieval, almond-shaped, resembles a boat in two trees with the Tower of the Rocca dei Conti Guidi and the belfry of the Chiesa di Santa Croce to soar onto the landscape. Vinci was founded by the Conti Guidi Castle around the year 1000, by the 13th century the city was annexed to the County of Florence but the village extra mural developed especially during the ' 400.
In today's old town, characterized by narrow medieval streets and panoramic views of the surrounding hills, which are enough to justify a visit to the Museo Leonardiano in Vinci which are showcasing the most original machines designed by Leonardo. In the village is worth visiting the Chiesa di Santa Croce which houses the baptismal font where he was baptized the scientist. In Anchiano, a small fraction of the municipality is, instead, the birthplace of Leonardo, a typical rural dwelling ' 400 which was born on 15 April 1452.
Traditions
Every July 31, takes place to win a very original reenactment, the Volo di Cecco Santi. Captain of the army of the borgo, in love with a maiden of the neighbouring and rival town of Cerreto Guidi, for love he betrayed his city and was sentenced to be thrown from the Tower of the Castle. The story tells that, if survived, the soldier would have been pardoned. The captain then asked as a last wish to drink a glass of Vinci wine, which turned out to be miraculous, sparing the young man from certain death. In that year the campaign was bumper harvests as well, the city, recalls the story as a sign of good luck.
Typical products
In the hills around Vinci, it produces an excellent olive oil IGP and an equally fine red wine Sangiovesecan be enjoyed together with many local meats.
