A VILLAGE ENRICHED BY BRUNELLESCHI'S TOWER
Vicopisano, near Pisa, is located between Mount Pisano and the Imperial Canal. Linked since the tenth century in Pisa in 1407 was conquered by Florence, which rebelled in 1494, but had to give back in 1498.
The medieval preserves numerous towers and remains of the fortifications. The Cassero and Torre del Brunelleschi, Torre dell'Orologio, a tower contemporary to arches, and the Torre delle quattro porte with Gothic arches are admirable examples of medieval architecture. These buildings were designed or renovated by the famous Brunelleschi in the 15th century.
The romanesque-pisan parish church, which preserves wooden sculptures of centuries XII-XIV, and the two roman churches of San Jacopo a Lupeta and of Andrea a Lupeta are outside the settlement.
Traditions and typical products
Vicopisano, every year in September hosts the Festa Medievale. The village was inspired by historical groups and medieval festivals. Cena medievale, which takes place in the Interior of the Praetorian Palace, is the highlight of the party. During the banquet, which follows the etiquette of 1200, are served exclusively prepared foods according to the customs of the middle ages.
Olive groves of Vicopisano produces extra virgin olive oil.
