ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS COASTLINES IN TUSCANY
Viareggio is an internationally renowned seaside resort situated on the tyrrhenian coast of Versilia. Has a good production of flowers, numerous industries and is an important fishing Center.
"Castrum lucchese" had developed between 1700 and 1800, during the reign of the Bourbons. Tourism was encouraged by the presence of the port and grew in the early 1900 when they built numerous bathing establishments and hotels. Even today, Viareggio can be considered a more lively and frequented coasts of Tuscany. The wide sandy beaches are lined with gardens and boulevards lined by hotels and shops; the Malaspina Castle and the Pineta di Levante constitute two splashes of green.
In Piazza Mazzini, the former Town Hall, houses the historical documentation centre A.C. Blanc which preserves the remains of an etruscan active dweller between the 8th century and 3rd century b.c.
Traditions and typical products
Viareggio is undoubtedly one of the Italian capitals of Carnival; for a whole month the city dresses up and its avenues are continuous paths parades of papier-mâché.
