EMBEDDED IN ROCK
Vernio lies on the northern side of the Valle del Bisenzio, crossed by the Apennines a due passi da Barberino del Mugello. The surrounding area is a set of green nestled between the cliffs of the mountains and watered by two rivers.
Its ancient origins are evidenced by the presence of a Roman bridge, built to link with surroundings given the strategic location of the country.
In 1512 the Spanish occupation provoked many economic difficulties, and the accounts Bards that inhabited the area to feed the population with chestnut flour and other food poor. From that time to mention this episode, Vernio organizes an annual folk festival in order not to forget its own history.
Traditions and typical products
Every year on the first Sunday of lent in the hamlet of San Quirico organizes La Polentina. A gastronomic event that commemorates the ancient Festa della Miseria which dates from 1576, where all over the country gather to taste the dishes of Tuscan tradition in an atmosphere of folklore.
For the occasion, you can taste the polenta di castagne, real specialities and fish dishes cod and herring.
