AN AREA SURROUNDED BY PLAINS, HILLS AND SEA
Vecchiano is located north of Pisa, on the edge of the natural park of Migliarino where is preserved a magnificent flora and fauna. The territory in the vicinity of the town is quite diversified. Since ancient times is characterized by the Lago di Massaciuccoli, from a large coastal vegetation, the hills and the plain cultivated.
Vecchiano, anciently, was Etruscan and Roman settlement. The old town is still surrounded by those defensive walls that once helped to repel the invaders. There are also the ruins of an Etruscan stronghold. The Castle, which belonged to the family G, lies in the hills outside the city, bordered by lush forests. Among the oldest churches, are notable la Chiesaccia of Malaventre, the remains of s. Pietro in Asconda on Mount Legnaio, s. Maria in Castello and s. Maria di Roma.
Marina di Vecchiano is a famous seaside locality that boasts four kilometers of golden sand beaches, largely left in its natural state. Here the water is clear and shallow.
Traditions and typical products
Vecchiano is famous for the production of olive oil. Strada dell'Olio dei Monti Pisani along the via pedemontana and also crosses this commune. The olive groves are cultivated starting from the Plains and then climb the hills. In the area are preserved the traditional crops of olives which are distinguished by the dark foliage and rounded.
