Val d'Elsa is an area in the Valley of the river Elsa, a tributary of the River Arno running through the low hills where are farms and crops of the highest quality. The medieval villages found inland, filled with historic buildings from high cultural value, enrich the entire area.

 

HISTORY THROUGH THE STRONG CONNECTION WITH THE MIDDLE AGES

The history of the Val D'elsa is intertwined with the first Etruscan civilizations of which today we can observe the ancient artefacts preserved in museums in the area. An imprint of absolute importance is observed even more markedly in the medieval period, traces of which you have through beautiful castles and churches.

 

FROM THE WEALTH OF THE TERRITORY TO CHARMING VILLAGES

Divided between north and south Val D'elsa, this area is positioned halfway between Val di Cecina and taking advantage of the richness of their land in the Chianti hills, and its strategic position in the flat area. Here art and culture meet inside of Castelfiorentino, Poggibonsi and Certaldo, historic places of Tuscany rich in suggestions.

Other points of interest include:

  • Il Mastio nei pressi di Palazzo Vicario: typical medieval fortification in Certaldo, with a single host glitzy housing Tower, an armoury and a stable
  • Pieve dei Santi Ippolito e Biagio church dating from the 12th century, with valuable ceramic decoration in Castelfiorentino, a few steps from the Museo Gazzoli that houses the Renaissance frescos of the famous painter Gaines.

Typical

The Prosciutto Toscano DOP is one of the leading products of the territory, coming from San Gimignano, this typical Tuscan sliced stands out for its aroma and flavour. Other typical salami is Finocchiona flavored thanks to fennel seeds. Flavors that can be accompanied by a glass of Vernaccia, the first Italian to receive the white wine -controlled denomination of origin label.

The municipalities that make up the territory are: Colle Val d'Elsa, Casole d'Elsa, Monteriggioni, Certaldo, Poggibonsi, Radicondoli and San Gimignano.
