Born as a business dedicated to building or repair of boats used for fishing, the work of modeling of wood that the Shipwrights held for thousands of years has slowly turned into a real art. That's how on Monte Argentario craftsmen have learned the different processing techniques that transform simple wooden hulls able to ply the waters.
With the growing demand for boats for recreational use the shipwrights became real artists, so that their creations have become objects of worship. On the promontory are active a dozen craftsmen thanks to a qualifying project, Porto Santo Stefano, involved young people who approach the world of work.
The importance of this ancient tradition has led to the creation of two permanent exhibitions: Submerged Memories and Shipwrights. The first gathers many findings in the sea of the Argentario path of ancient trade routes; many objects dating back to Etruscan and Roman times. The view Shipwrights is dedicated just to the traditional construction of boats in Argentario and exposes the tools of the trade and the scale models of boats.
