The municipal territory of Tavarnelle, located between the Val di Pesa and Val d'Elsa, is half-included in the Chianti Classico production zone and another part in the production area of Chianti Colli Fiorentini.
The first name of the village appears to have been "Tabernulae "", derived from ancient taverns where travelers stopped for refreshment and rest the horses along the road from Val d'Elsa cruised the famous via Francigena. In the locality of Passignano, worth a visit to the Abbazia di San Michele Arcangelo, impressive monastic complex dating back to the year 1049, which impresses with its resemblance to the classic walled defensive fortresses.
Traditions and typical products
Little known is the art of craftsmanship embroidery of Tavarnelle, original lace born early ' 900 by the skilled hands of a nun. Although there have been very few seamstresses to pass on the craft of lace of Tavarnelle, this continues to be a heavily sought after product, used to enrich the clothes and linen kits.
On the ground floor of the Museo d’Arte Sacra di Tavarnelle can admire anexhibition of some of the most prized works made of lace.
