ALDOBRANDESCO DOMINO
Suvereto, village of medieval origin, was born in the Val di Cornia and was part of the province of Livorno. Castrum of Suvereto is not far away is the beautiful Tuscan Coast known as the Etruscan coast which from the Etruscan city of Populonia. Its origins date back toaround the year 1000 and the counts Aldobrandeschi, in 1100, began the construction of the Rocca Aldobrandesca , around which the town. At the end of the middle ages Suvereto became a domain of the Principality of Piombino.
The town, which is accessed from the door to the South, and contains the Church of San Giusto, built aroundl 923 ad, but reworked in Romanesque style to 1189. Continuing stands the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, now houses the Museum of sacred art of Suvereto.
The ancient village, consisting of stone houses and stone, is well preserved despite periods of depopulation and abandonment of the town.
Traditions
In Suvereto, during the Palio di San Marco and the Palio of the Emperor, the Corsa delle Botti which replaced the original dispute with the horses. In spring there is the Palio di s. Croce, in honor of local Patron Saint. During the summer, instead, is the Palio of the Emperor (in memory of Henry VII of Luxembourg). During these competitions compete representatives of districts and villages of Suvereto.
