"Stufato alla sangiovannese" is a recipe of Valdarno and the stories about the birth of this delicacy are different.
Anyway the dish seems to date back to 1478 when, during a period of plague, Monna Tancia asked the Madonna to get the food to feed the hungry nephew. The miracle happened and faithful flocked from all Tuscany Valdarno to give thanks to the Virgin Mary. To restore the many faithful was put to cook a large quantity of meat flavored with many different spices.
Now the pot is proposed during lunch on Sundays involved during the Carnival, when families get together and enjoy the unique flavor of the stew.
The passion for this uniqueness is so strong that from 2009 has been called the "Palio dello stufato alla sangiovannese", event which sees awarded one who prepares the best stew of the current edition.
