MEDIEVAL VILLAGE WITH A SPLENDID SEA
The municipality of Scarlino overlooks the Gulf of Follonica, inside there is a large forest complex of Bandite di Scarlino where the high and rocky coast is interspersed with splendid coves like Cala Martina and the still best known Cala Violina, white sandy beach.
Inhabited in ancient times, there are traces of Hellenistic and later Roman period. It was a Dominion of the Aldobrandeschi counts until the 12th century, conquered in 1227. In the highest part of the country you can still admire the imposing Rocca Aldobrandesca also known as Rocca Pisana, complex consists of three towers joined by a wall of different heights.
Traditions
The Carriere del ’19 is the main event of the village of Scarlino reminiscent of something that happened in 1855 when the plague of cholera ceased suddenly and you thought of a supernatural intervention. During the event the 3 districts will compete in races between archers and plays and the whole village is animated by contradaioli and ladies with period costumes.
Typical
Among the local products inevitable autochthonous wine and olive oil along with the typical dishes of Tuscan tradition.
