AREA RICH IN ETRUSCAN NECROPOLIS
Sarteano is a small hamlet perched on the hills in the province of Siena. It is placed between two valleys of Tuscany: the Val di Chiana and the wildest Val d'Orcia.
The village is dominated by a castle built around the year 1000 and the surrounding countryside is dotted with hot springs and the Etruscan necropolis.
The imposing Castle di Sarteano, which is reached through the peace garden, offers a beautiful view over the Valley. The first witness on the building dates from 1038 but probably it was built at one time. The castle is now used for art exhibitions.
Museo Civico Archeologico is located in the Renaissance Palazzo Gabrielli and preserves artifacts mainly from Etruscan necropolis in the area. Particularly relevant is the reproduction of the Tomb of the Quadriga Infernale that was discovered in a cemetery in the area.
The Teatro Arrischianti, situated inside the Palazzo del Municipio dates back to 1680 and underwent a major renovation in 1740. It was built at the behest of the noble families of the time. The name Arrischianti means "those who run risks" and the emblem of the theatre there is engraved the motto "to be richer courting danger".
Other things to see are in Sarteano is the Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo and the Chiesa di San Martino, converted to the neoclassical style in 1841. Here is a very important work of art, the Annunciation by Domenico Beccafumi. The birthplace of Pope Pius III, the Palazzo Goti-Fanelli and historical pharmacy are other buildings that deserve to be mentioned.
