A VILLAGE THAT STRETCHES ALONG THE BANKS OF THE ARNO RIVER
Santa Croce sull'Arno is a town in the province of Pisa. The town can be traced back to the early Middle Ages even if there are clear evidence of the existence of the town up to 1200. The municipality becomes Dominion of Florence in 1330 until 1925, when it became part of the province of Pisa.
In the area is by visiting the Monastero di Santa Cristiana. The history of the monastery began in 1286 when Christian Oringa Menabuoi, Christian Saint, founded a convent of the Augustinian cloister. Other religious buildings are Chiesa di San Rocco, established in 1658 and Collegiata di San Lorenzo dating back to 1200.
Traditions
Holy Cross is part of the lower Valdarno, always known area for tanneries. These activities have had great luck since 1700 and still are an important resource for the territory. Tannery district is based on the numerous handicraft activities which have developed in recent years. The shoe factories and businesses that make leather accessories are expanding rapidly and are a tourist attraction.
Typical products
A typical dessert from Santa Croce sull'Arno is amaretto di Santa Croce. This trick was invented by nuns of the Monastero Agostiniano Santa Cristina to thank supporters of the monastery. Festa dell'Amaretto takes place in December, this time the bakers and confectioners of the municipality will compete to win the so-called "amaretto".
