ANCIENT FIEF OF THE FLORENTINE REPUBLIC
Rufina, known as "La Rufina", is located east of Florence and to the north of the town of Pontassieve. The village is nestled in the Tuscan countryside, characterized by Cypress and stone farmhouses.
La Rufina was founded to be a feudal estate, acting as an aristocratic rural residence under the Republic of Florence. Today is still intact, the Castello di Rufina, a massive square stone structure with semi-circular tower and adjoining chapel. Once the keep was the centrepiece of the estate. On the outskirts of town lies the splendid Villa Busini, a Renaissance palace overlooking Italian gardens decorated with sculptures. The building is in a dominant position among olive groves, vineyards and Woods, with a lovely view.
The area is dotted with a network of hiking trails, making it a good place for lovers of the outdoors.
Traditions and typical products
Rufina, is production of subarea Chianti Rufina DOCG, wine well-known and appreciated. The vineyards are located on of rolling hills at the foot of the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines. To celebrate this winemaking tradition was born the Chianti Rufina and Pomino wine road, a must for those who love good wine. Also, in the Interior of the Villa di Poggio Reale is hosted the Museo della Vite e del Vino.
A typical product of the area is the 'bardiccio', a sausage made with pork meat and pork.
