THE VILLAGE OF VAL D'ELSA NEAR CHIANTI
Poggibonsi is positioned between the Val d'Elsa and the hills of Chianti, land of vines that give life to Tuscan wines.
The town developed in the Middle Ages when it was still called Borgo Marturi, but was already inhabited in Roman times. The Guidi counts who controlled the territory had built the fortification of Poggiobonizio in defense of enemy cities like Florence. The town was located in a strategic point of the Via Francigena and became the scene of battles for many years, until in the 14th century it became part of the Florentine State.
Poggibonsi still retains the ancient medieval charm. The churches that were built around 1300 represented each wards into which he had divided the town. Some of these are still visitable, as the oldest Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, the "Church of the Florentine" in neo-classical style.
Traditions
