Made in Tuscany (Italy)

"ThePanforte finds its origin in the High Middle Ages. The name of this exquisite specialty comes not from its hardness, but from the term "strong", which at that time meant "acid", from a bread that in Siena was prepared according to a popular custom with water, flour and kneaded with soured fruit.
In the Statute of the guilds of bakers, around 1280 there are hints of the panforte and its preparation. At that time, in Tuscany we were talking about "panes melato" and "panes pepatos". In addition to honey and fruit, black pepper was also added; Spices were also used since 1300: cloves, cinnamon. The panforte was packaged mainly in convents, where pilgrims returning from the Holy Land brought spices and aromas and gave it to the monks."
Note by Franco Talozzi.
