Gem of nature and history
The town of Orbetello, almond-shaped, is connected to Monte Argentario from an artificial dam (diga Leopoldiana) built in 1841. Populated since Etruscan times, assumed importance during Roman rule. In 1414 Orbetello was captured by the Senese and Spanish in 1557 the German army and made it the capital of the State of the Deans of Spain. In the 18th century it passed to the Bourbons of Naples and 14 years after the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The events of the past make Orbetello a municipality rich in architectural treasures. Entering the city, welcomes visitors with the old mill, witness of Spanish rule and the impressive Etruscan walls. In the city centre, however, several buildings dating back to the Spanish period.
The lagoon is also inserted inside the Oasi WWF di Orbetello, the most important of the Tyrrhenian Sea for its location along the migratory routes of the birds
Traditions and typical products
From 1768 tradition and folklore mingle in the Palio Marinaro of Orbetello. In the waters of the lagoon, on the last Sunday in July, will compete with blows of oars the five districts of the country: the Duomo, Piazza D'Armi, Porto, Neghelli and Stazione.
Among the typical products, the Orbetello bottarga, Slow Food Presidium. The Presidium aims to protect small endangered quality productions and made according to traditional practices.
