AN OPEN AIR MUSEUM
Murlo is situated in the Valle di Merse, an area of hills, woods and nature reserves between the Crete Senesi and the territory of Montalcino. The first traces of human settlements date back to the Etruscan age (7th and 6th century BC). The remains of the Etruscan site of Poggio Aguzzo and necropolis of Poggio Civitate are exhibited in the archaeological museum which is housed in the former Bishop's Palace. Don't miss the stone Cathedral of San Fortunato and, near the village, the ruins of the Hermitage of Montespecchio. In the past, the community of Murlo, claiming economically with coal mining. The lignite mines remained in business until the mid-1900.
The village was awarded the Bandiera arancione of the Italian Touring Club.
Traditions and Typical products
To preserve the memory of the mining activity was created the Miners trail, a path that follows the old railway line, which is used to transport the coal mined at the work center location.
The territory of Murlo is also renowned for research of the precious white truffle with which you can prepare many typical dishes of the Tuscan tradition.
