MINING VILLAGE, SUSTAINABLE
The village of Montieri lies at 705 metres above sea level, located on the northern slopes of the mountain of the same name, in the territory of the Colline Metallifere. The origins of the village are attributable to copper and silver deposits in the territory; the same name "Mons Aeris", copper mountain, is significant of this wealth. Whole territory bases its story on the presence of mineral deposits; after ups and downs, during which Montieri was long contended between Siena and Volterra for the richness of its lands, was conquered by Senesi in 1326. Crossing the streets of its old town is like stepping in the medieval atmosphere that has characterized the history of the country. The village houses the romanesque Chiesa di San Giacomo, from the 13th century and the Cassero Senese del ' 200, one of the oldest buildings, placed in a dominant position overlooking the town. In the Woods, on the other hand, the remains of a singular church with flower plant with six petals, the only example in the world.
By 2014, the city was awarded the title of "eco-friendly", having created a district heating plant in geothermal steam by exploiting his position inside the largest geothermal basin Italian.
Traditions and typical products
Typical product of the area is the "prugnolo", prized spring mushroom which like other few mushrooms well lends itself to be consumed raw and to which the village of Montieri dedicates a Festival the second weekend of May.
