COLLINE METALLIFERE'S FAN
The municipality of Monteverdi Marittimo lies in the Valley of the river Sterza at an altitude of 364 metres above sea level. The village, with its characteristic fan shape that looks out over the Valley, preserves the typical features of the medieval villages. The downtown of Monteverdi, while preserving the remains of a Roman road, dates from the period of Foundation of the Abbey of Monastero di San Pietro in Palazzuolo, first administrative centre of the territory which stretched between Volterra and Massa Marittima , whose founder Walfredo was a Lombard nobleman. Next to the Abbey is the Castello di Monteverdi Marittimo, whose story did not go hand in hand with that of the monastery. While the village was under the Dominion of Volterra, the Benedictine monks of the Abbey were under the protection of Massa Marittima.
Within the territory of Monteverdi Marittimo is also the Riserva Naturale di Monterufoli e Caselli, in which to admire different animal species, the special flowering of wild orchids and the pond "golazze aperte".
