THE VILLAGE OF PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA
Monterchi overlooks the Apennine and has one of the highest hills of the Tiber Valley, overlooking the surrounding landscape.
The story of Monterchi is developed in medieval times, when the town began to take shape, with structures still intact. The village was inspected before from Arezzo and then from Florence, but owes its fortunes to an anecdote related to one of the most important Renaissance Tuscan artists.
Piero della Francesca painted in the second half of the fifteenth century the fresco of Madonna del Parto, a masterpiece of religious art preserved within the Museum of the village. An artwork that he decided to leave it as a gift to the country where he was born his mother, to whom dedicated it.
Traditions and typicality
The monterchiese dish is polenta, specialty proposal during the Polenta fair that takes place in the fall. On this occasion you can taste it in more variations as with sauce, roasted, fried, with sausages, with the livers or fried mushrooms.
