THE CHARMING VILLAGE OF VAL DI CHIANA
Monte San Savino is an active agricultural town situated on a hill in the heart of the Val di Chiana. It is characterized by its hilly landscape full of olive groves.
Has Roman origins and in the 13th century it belonged to Ubertini. It passed under the Dominion of Arezzo and Florence and the latter obtained the domain from 1385 onwards.
The village is rich in medieval and Renaissance buildings such as "Palazzo di Monte" and "Palazzo di Monte e i Giardini Pensili", Town Hall, the Church of Saints Tiburtius and Susanna, the "Castello di Gargonza" and "Logge dei Mercanti"; the lodges also called market Lodges, a building of 1500 is the seat of the municipality.
To visit the Santuario di Santa Maria delle Vertighe, containing works of relief as the Nativity of the Virgin of Bernardino Santini, the diptych with San Savino and San Romualdo tosini, our Lady of Vertighe and four stories of the Virgin of Margarito and refreshment of Arezzo; but also the Chiesa of San Agostino of the ' 300 with its Gothic portal and a beautiful cloister is well worth the visit.
Traditions and Typical products
In november in Monte San Savino is celebrated the ancient horse fair, the "Fiera di Santa Caterina". The historic occasion fills with gastronomic banquets, exhibitions of vehicles and equipment while the workshops and stores remain open for the duration of the event.
As the whole Val di Chiana, Monte San Savino is a land of products such as olive oil, wine, ribollita and Chianina meat dishes from this geographical area.
