TERRITORY OF GENTLE SLOPES LEADING DOWN TO THE COAST
The municipality of Massarosa is located in Versilia, to the North of Tuscany. The name Massarosa originates from the ancient name "Massa Grausi," Union of the terms "mass", that is, extensive agricultural property, with the term Germanic "Garry", owner of the fief. In 1300 the Republic of Lucca began to dominate permanently on this portion of the territory leaving Pietrasanta to the Florentine Republic.
It is worth visiting the imposing romanesque Chiesa di Pieve a Elci, one of the most majestic of Versilia. The building was commissioned by San Frediano between 400 and 500 and 1200 century it was enlarged considerably. The Bell Tower dates back to 800 and served as a lookout point.
Fittings are also the romanesque Chiesa di San Martino di Bargecchia and the Chiesa di S. Michele Arcangelo di Corsanico. The many villas scattered in the countryside of Massarosa were built between 1500 and 1800 by rich merchants of Lucca.
Traditions and Typical products
Massarosa is known to be an important centre for the production of extra virgin olive oil. This excellent product is characterized by a strong flavor and slightly fruity. A typical dessert in the area is the Pupporina, a cake made with simple ingredients.
