A VILLAGE SURROUNDED BY OLIVE GROVES AND VINEYARDS
Massa e Cozzile is located in the province of Pistoia, in the Centre of Valdinievole. The municipality lies mainly in the hills. The nucleus of the mass is of medieval origin and is inhabited by a few hundred people. Cozzileis located at high altitude and is renowned for its well preserved medieval fortress.
The New Castle was built in 1100, acting as lookout on the territory. Today is in great condition and retains the architectural features of the castles-Castle: narrow streets, homes built on top of each other and a central square.
Massa e Cozzile also maintains two religious buildings: "Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta" and the "Chiesa di San Jacopo Maggiore". The first, already documented in the 800 meters, is in Romanesque style and houses a "Madonna con bambino" created from the Della Robbia school. Also notable is the organ of 1785. "Chiesa di San Jacopo Maggiore", instead, is 1200 and consists of three naves and one can admire an organ of 1700 in carved wood, well executed.
Traditions and Typical products
The chestnut woods of the surroundings of Massa e Cozzile produce fruit. Chestnuts can be enjoyed cooked over charcoal (frugiate) or cooked (boiled chestnuts). Excellent also the "necci" flour (or chestnut) that is used to achieve "necci", a typical dessert, similar to crepes, stuffed with ricotta.
