THE CITY THAT HOSTED THE PASCOLI
Mass is positioned halfway between the Valley of the Frigido's river and the western part of the Apuan Alps.
Historically linked to the municipality of Carrara, the city knows a strong development in the middle ages as the capital of the independent Principality before and Duchy, ruled by the Malaspina and Cybo-Malaspina, then.
The Duomo is the masterpiece of the city, enriched by the white marble façade and polychrome marble on the floor, the door and the interior finishes. Massa is also rich in Baroque and Renaissance buildings ordered by Cybo-Malaspina family, that as long he reigned in the city and home to Villa Pascoli, Italian youth residence of poet.
Traditions and Typical products
To mass produce cheese and goat cheese, two specialties taken from goat milk race Massa grazing in the Valley apuana. Two other local products are the "barbe di frate", a vegetable used to flavor white meat, and the wine "Candia dei Colli Apuani DOC", a white Vermentino and Malvasia grapes.
