LUCCA, WALLED CITIES OF ART CINQUECENTESCE
Lucca is located in the plain of the Serchio and has a history of previleges and fortunes tied to its municipal autonomy of 1119. Struggling against Pisa, which was subdued, regained freedom becoming Republic, winning against Florence, the historic battle of Altopascio.
Artistically one of the most interesting cultural centres of Italy, Lucca has been dubbed the "City of 100 churches". Their architecture are situated in the historical centre of the city, from which to admire the picturesque views of the high bell towers, Torre dell'Orologio and the towers of Renaissance palaces. The beauty of Lucca is also demonstrated by the wall that runs around the perimeter of the city and for which it was required to enter a UNESCO heritage site.
Traditions
Lucca is full of events that take place in all the period of year. Besides the famous Lucca Comics, a festival dedicated to comics and games, the biggest in Europe, the Fiera Medievale della Santa Croce and the religious procession during the Festa dell'Esaltazione della Santa Croce.
Typical
The wine Colline Lucchesi DOC and the Montecarlo DOC are two examples of how the land of Lucchesia both the emblem of Tuscan character at the table. These two red wines are perfect with the local cuisine: the tortelli, stuffed egg pasta with meat and herbs of the field, the bread lucchese, Tuscan bread and salty than sweet called buccellato.
