The Litorale Pisano extends from Marina di Vecchiano, near the mouth of the river Serchio, up to Livorno and Pisa city represents the mouth towards the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The story of this part of the coast is fairly recent and dates from the late 19th century when they began to rise the first villas, many of which are in Art Nouveau style that within a short time became a real Center: Marina di Pisa . During the fascist regime the marshy area south of Marina di Pisa was included in the program of redevelopment along with the area of Calambrone, Pisa's Republic originally great seaport that so over the years were expanding.
Along the coast there are 3 protected areas: the natural park of Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli, which covers 23,000 acres in the coastal strip from Viareggio to Livorno; the Oasi Dune di Tirrenia (managed by the WWF) and Oasi Bosco di Cornacchiaia.
Typical products
Inextricably linked to the region of real organic food delicacies such as "Miele di spiaggia" collected in the area of the Park of Migliarino San Rossore and the pecorino of Parco di Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli, soft or semi sweet cheese, made exclusively from whole sheep's milk from breeds reared in the Park.
The most important center of the Pisan coast is Pisa.
