The Razza Ovina Pomarancina has historically originated in the area of the municipality of Pomarance, hence its name. The current production areas are the towns of Pomarance, Volterra, Montecatini Val di Cecina and Castelnuovo Val di Cecina
Selected from the Apennine breed sheep "La pomarancina" is of medium size, with the white coat and the torso and limbs long and solid. Bred to grazing in hilly areas often impassable, the heads are appreciated for the quality of their meat and for theexcellent quality of their milk and wool.
Saved from extinction about twenty years ago, the "La Pomarancina" breed of sheep is a Slow Food Presidio and the 2006 breeders gathered in Consorzio Agbello Pomarancino, aiming to protect and enhance the product.
