TRADITIONAL TUSCAN LANDSCAPE
Gavorrano, rich country from the viewpoint of mining for its deposits of pyrite, is located on the northern slopes of Monte d'Alma. It is known because here we met his death the lady from Siena Pia de' Tolomei, mentioned by Dante in the fifth canto of Purgatorio (Divina Commedia). The municipality of Gavorrano was already inhabited at the time of the Etruscans, as shown by the remains of ancient necropolis. Object of fights, during the middle ages, between Massa Marittima and Siena, was then annexed to the latter and then to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The discovery of deposits of pyrite around 1898, transformed Gavorrano in a mining center of great importance with the subsequent demographic development of the country.
Traditions and typical products
In the event the "Salto della Contessa", in August, Gavorrano gives life to historical commemoration in medieval costumes of the tragic death of Pia dei Tolomei. The palio contrade including equestrian dei Tolomei and Pannocchieschi prelude to the evening performance.
With the olive oil, the Monteregio DOC wines are the protagonists of the local culinary tradition. From Gavorrano also passes the Strada del vino Monteregio, a tourist itinerary to discover the wineries the wineries of the area.
