GEM OF VERSILIA
The town of Forte dei Marmi overlooks the Ligurian Sea on the North coast of the province of Lucca. The area, once swampy, is now rich in nature with vast pine forests, tree-lined boulevards and villas with large gardens. Around the sixteenth century came the development of the area after Michelangelo drew the road for transport of marble from the Apuane Alps to the sea. The name of the city comes from the Fort that stands in the Centre of the country and the Marbles that were transported to the Jetty to take to the sea. The "Forte Lorenese" (18th century), now become the symbol of the city, was used as a warehouse for the marbles in the period in which Forte dei Marmi functioned as a port.
At the end of the eighteenth century, as a result of reclamation leopoldine, the site is populated by fishermen and marble workers until the nineteenth century that grew the industry. The takeoff of Forte dei Marmi to tourist activity, when at the end of ' 800 the city became a favorite of an elite of aristocrats, industrialists and intellectuals.
The municipal area is also home to theWWF, Forte dei Marmi Dunes where it is still possible to let yourself be enchanted by the scenery of Versilia tourist resort development not altered.
Traditions and typicality
Has a great tradition on "Mercato di Forte dei Marmi". On sale is the best Italian handcraft quality: leather, cashmere and Florentine art in General. The market sellers gathered in the Consortium "Peddlers of Forte dei Marmi" in order to make traveling this "show" in the squares of Italy. Goal is to exalt the Made in Italy and Made in Tuscany as a symbol of the best expression of Italian craftsmanship and trade.
