ONE OF THE OLDEST PLACES OF MAREMMA
Civitella Paganico is positioned between the hills and the flat part of the Valle dell'Ombrone, whose stream crosses much of the territory. Civitella is a very old country, inhabited between the bronze age and the iron age, and with a fascinating history tied to Tuscan families which alternated in medieval times.
The legacy of this period is a collection of artistic works of great value, as evidenced by the impressive city walls surrounding the old town of Paganico, and the beautiful piazza della Vittoria with a medieval well.
Traditions
One of the most popular traditions in Civitella Paganico is the Palio della Granocchia, a race that pits the four districts, intent on pushing a wheelbarrow containing three frogs.
This event which binds to the Sagra della Granocchia, where frog dishes are prepared, also hosts the demonstration Rioni in cucina, a competition where are prepared the dishes of Maremma between wards.
Typical products
In Civitella you can taste the typical products of the Maremma. The "Montecucco", DOC red wine ideal with cheese and red meat as steaks or wild boar. The exceptional olive oil coming from local mills, perfect to dress Tuscan bread and give life to the delicious bruschetta.
