VILLAGE BUILT AROUND A CASTLE
The municipality of Cinigiano is nestled between the Valle dell'Ombrone, the Val d'Orcia and the outfall slopes of Monte Amiata.
Developed around a medieval castle in the 12th century, in 1254 Cinigiano was under the dominion of Siena. In the mid-16th century the village passed, along with Siena, to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. On the Knoll overlooking the village is the Cassero, in the oldest part of Cinigiano, together with the remains of the medieval fortress. In the municipality is also the Riserva Naturale di Poggio dell’Olmo, where you can follow various paths for hiking in the Woods.
Traditions and typicality
In Cinigiano, during the grape harvest, the traditional Festa dell'uva. The protagonist is the Montecucco DOCG wine, to be tasted together with the many typical local products. During the event colorful floats paraded through the streets of the town of papier mache made by inhabitants of the three districts: the Cassero, the Molino and the Pescina; the best float wins the Cup put up for grabs.
