AT THE HEART OF CASENTINO FOREST, THE SANCTUARY OF ST. FRANCESCO
The territory, at the heart of the National Park of casentino forests, insinuates itself between the Casentino and the Val Tiberina. Monte Penna is the holy mountain and the centerpiece of this area that hosts the Santuario della Verna. The Church is linked to the figure of San Francesco who made it a place of retreat and prayer for prolonged periods. It is said that here received the seal of the stigmata. Inside you will find the Museum consisting of 15th-century halls and rooms of the old convent, with a Guest House that welcomes those who wish to stay for several days. The municipality every year, pilgrims from all over the world come to visit the holy place; that's why Chiusi della Verna is a small jewel of Tuscany.
Traditions and Typical products
The territory is rich in events and traditions to explore. From 9 to 27 December you can visit the typical Christmas markets where crafts and Christmas air frame the country. In the summer months it is worth following the "Trekking with acoustic concert on Monte Penna": a long walk silently through the Woods to appreciate and admire these places. During the last week of October to casentino National Park held the literary event "Libra, Casentino Book Festival".
The specialties of Chiusi della Verna are the "buccellato toscano", small buns with raisins and anise and the “castagnaccio“, sweet chestnut flour, raisins, pine nuts and walnuts. Among the festivals, the Sagra del tartufo and the Sagra del pane in August, apericiccia and the Historical and medieval dinner, in July.
