VILLAGE NESTLED IN THE WOODS, PUNCTUATED BY ABBEYS
The land nestled in the Woods, houses a small castle which dates back to the Lombard period between the 7th and 8th centuries. The castle in the 1100 was played between the Republic of Siena, the Gherardesca counts of Frosini, and the Bishops of Volterra. Later, Siena prevailed and became part of his possessions. The village preserves numerous medieval structures including the House which is believed to have born San Galgano (Galgano Guidotti). The Dominion of Siena brought great prosperity for the city of Siena, two new walls were built, and numerous abbeys including the famous Abbey of San Galgano.
Around the village are also worth a visit-castello di Frosini, former residence of the della Gherardesca, Luriano and the Montalcinello Castle.
Traditions
Abbazia di San Galgano, impressive since it lacks a roof, is part of the complex located just a few minutes away from the Centre of Chiusdino. It includes Eremo di Montesiepi, within which lies the ancient Spada nella Roccia. One of the most beautiful and visited places of Tuscany, whose history hides a secret: San Galgano, who before the vocation was a Knight, stuck the sword in the stone, changing in this way the function, and turning it into a cross.
Also of note is the famous and compelling Palla Eh!, a collection of games of skill, strategy and cunning that has Roman origins and which takes place in the streets of the village of Chiusdino.
