Chianciano Terme is surrounded by a relaxing landscape, typical of the Val di Chiana. Situated halfway between Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana, was the Centre of trade since you passed the ancient via Rossellana that joined Arezzo, Perugia, Chiusi with coastal towns.
The city dates back to Etruscan and Roman times is famous since ancient times for the presence of waters from the healing power that flow in this area.
Together with the nearby Chiusi Chianciano, having been one of the most important Etruscan cities, is rich. Excavation underway since 1990 by an ancient necropolis, brings out every day new discoveries: ziro tombs and graves in Dumpster dated in the 7th century BC, Canopic jars, gifts such as jewelry in silver and bronze.
Chianciano during the Middle Ages it was the Centre of struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines and contention from the nearby town of Montepulciano, Siena and Orvieto. It became a possession of the Republic of Siena and follow the fortunes of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany until the unification of Italy.
In the early 1900s the baths were taken in by a private concession and several factories were built. Gli anni ' 40 saw a great development of the town thanks to the enhancement of the spa and tourism. Still continue to create new structures to allow visitors to enjoy the hot springs.
Traditions and Typical products
In Chianciano Terme is Archeofest, dedicated to the culture and archaeology. Among the best known are the dish typical of Chianciano pici, but also tagliatini or Macaroni and "panzanella" made with stale bread. Can not miss the ribollita, the rivoltolo (wheat flour cooked in oil), but also raviggiolo.
