MEDICI RESIDENCE
The town benefits from a convenient location, which made it crucial in previous centuries because easily reachable from Florence by river or by land and not far from the woods of Montalbano and from the marsh of Fucecchio.
Because of its importance, the Medici family built a country house. The villa, today a UNESCO World Heritage site, was designed by the architect Buontalenti commissioned by Cosimo I de ' Medici, who used the home base for his hunting activities. The Villa became more famous after the mysterious murder of Isabella dei Medici at the hands of her husband Paolo Giordano I Orsini, Duke of Bracciano.
Cerreto in Greti appeared for the first time in 780 in some historical documents but is the 16th century, characterized by the dominance of doctors to be critical to its history. The country, reached the current regional planning in the first half of the 19th century, when part of its territory was detached and annexed to the town of Vinci. During World War II it was the scene of the "massacre of the marsh of Fucecchio", in which a score of its inhabitants were killed by the Nazis.
Traditions
To revive the traditions of the country was the “Sagra del papero e del cinghiale“ di Cerreto Guidi, an event that has become staple of summer cerretese. Created to evoke the threshing of the grain, at which time the typical lunch and her dish was just the duck.
Typical products
In recent time in the municipality of Cerreto Guidi has started producing a IGT (Typical Geographical Indication) Red obtained by careful exposition of the vines in loamy soils/sand, in order to obtain a wine of high quality.
