FORMER COUNTY BERARDENGA
The municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga is located on the southern slopes of the Chianti Classico and is about 20 km from Siena. The town's name derives from the ancient territory belonging to the County of Berardenghi family.
In 1366 the current Castelnuovo Berardenga after building a castle in the area, surrounded by a long wall with six towers. Of the ancient defence system trace remains in the high tower in Piazza Petrilli, turned into municipal clock tower in 1755. After the fall of Siena, the town is situated under the rule of the Medici.
The municipality of Castelnuovo includes within it many small villages full of charm, like the ancient village of Vagliagli or San Giovanni Cerreto.
Traditions and typical products
From the land of Castelnuovo originates a great wine, the Classico Berardenga, produced from vineyards in the Chianti Classico DOCG.
The municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga has also joined the movement Città Slow – the city of good living. The municipalities that are part of are engaged in environmental and infrastructure policies that enhance the territory and safeguard indigenous productions while promoting the culture of hospitality.
