ANCIENT LEGA DEL CHIANTI
The commune of Castellina is situated on the border of the Senese and Florentine side of the Chianti area, on a ridge overlooking the Valdelsa and the surrounding area.
Its origins date back to the Etruscan period, several archaeological findings in the area testify to the period as the Tumulo di Montecalvario, example of Etruscan tomb. The development of Castellina is tied to the Florentine conquest of Chianti; in the 14th century, is one of the main centers of the Lega del Chianti, political-military alliance for the defense of the area to which they belonged only Castellina, Radda and Gaiole. The Florentines turned it into important stronghold, because of its strategic position between Florence and Siena, whose trace remains in the Rocca di Castellina in Chianti. With the abolition of the League at the end of the 18th century, Castellina becomes common.
