PLACE CONTENDED AND SCOPE
The municipality of Castell'Azzara is located at the foot of Monte Civitella, legend has it that its name derives from the game of "zara" (dice) in which the three brothers Aldobrandeschi, Ildebrandino, Bonifacio and Guglielmo, were played the fief. Long disputed by powerful families of the surrounding towns, the village of Castell'Azzara was finally annexed in the 17th century the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Worth a visit, in the village of Selvana, la Rocca Silvana, one of the most important strongholds of the middle ages in the area of Amiata, built by the Aldobrandeschi family.
Between the 19th and 20th centuries, finally, the city became an important mining center for extraction of cinnabar, from which they get the mercury.
Traditions and Typical products
In an unspoiled natural environment, the tartufo di Castell'Azzara, typical products of the territory. An excellent product, with whom the municipality was awarded the title of Città del Tartufo, also becoming a member of the Associazione Nazionale Città del Tartufo for the protection and promotion of the truffle areas. Among the sweets the topi, small crescent-shaped pastries filled with honey, nuts, orange peel, anise and cinnamon flavor and unmistakable fragrance.
