ANCIENT ROMAN CASTRUM
Castelfranco di Sotto is a municipality in the province of Pisa, located on the north bank of the Arno, whose territory has a largely wooded and hilly landscape.
Was founded as a village with lots of walls with sixteen towers around the 13th century, when the then existing villages decide to combine as a fortified site safe from continual fighting between Guelphs and Ghibellines. Today the town still preserves the typical Roman castrese with two main roads that intersect at the Center and leading to four gates of Castelfranco.
Traditions
In the area of Castelfranco di Sotto, is one of national poles for the manufacture of leather, high quality product that receives the interest even of the major apparel and accessories.
Among the traditional celebrations, however, every year there is the Palio dei Barchini, where the four districts of the country compete in a race of little boats with wheels in the main square. During the event the village is animated by musicians and flag flyers dressed in period costumes.
Typical products
The watermelon of Orentano, part of the municipality of Castelfranco, is a typical local watermelon, sweet and slightly oval round.
