Castagneto Carducci

THE VILLAGE OF CARDUCCI

The municipal area lies at the heart of the Maremma livornese in the heart of the Costa degli Etruschi. The coastal strip is where, in the town of Marina di Castagneto, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and is characterized by green pinewoods.

The medieval castle is the first settlement of the town, whose fortunes are tied to the family of Della Gherardesca. At the end of the 12th century the town was donated to the city of Pisa in recognition of the help given to the Emperor Henry VI, Holy Roman Emperor, in the conquest of southern Italy. With the annexation of Pisa by the Florentines in the 15th century, had received greater autonomy while remaining still for many centuries under the rule of the Gherardesca counts (vicars of the Florentine Republic). Along with the Castle, the Chiesa di San Lorenzo is the oldest building, dating back to medieval times and situated in the old town with a characteristic pattern in concentric rings.

The town, originally called the early 900 Castagneto Marittima changed its name to Castagneto Carducci in honor of the famous Italian poet who in the village he spent his childhood. Carducci House is now a museum where you can admire a rich archive with his poems and documents linked to him.

 

Traditions and typical products

The oil and wine of the territory are among the most appreciated local products at international level, is in the small hamlet of Bolgheri which was founded one of the world's most famous wines the Bolgheri DOC. In Castagneto, however there is also a local cuisine inspired by traditional Tuscan recipes.

Among the events that animate the territory annually, for lovers of outdoor sports, the BOLGHERIRUN and the Etrusca ciclostorica, cycling tour to make riding vintage bicycles.
