TERRACE OVERLOOKING THE SEA
The municipality of Capoliveri extends over a hill at 167 metres above sea level that goes from the plain of Mola on the North to the Punta della Calamita on Southern .
The downtown retains the typical aspect of the medieval villages. Plots of alleys and stairways surmounted by arches conceal the artisan shops and typical restaurants where you can taste the typical dishes. Born as deep in the Etruscan-Roman Fortress, from its position it was possible to control the seas to the South and West. Latin period the town was known as Caput Liberum (Free Hill, referring to the God Liber known as Bacchus) because place full of vineyards. In the middle ages Capoliveri was fortified by Pisans to defend itself from the frequent pirate raids.
Traditions and typical products
Traditions of the country have long been related to mining in mines of Calamita and Ginepro that gave employment to locals, until 1980 when production was suspended. In order to know the history of these places are worth a visit to the Museo della Vecchia Officina set up on the premises of the mechanical workshop of the mine.
A tribute to the history of the country and the many fellow citizens employed in the mines is the Festa del Cavatore, re-enactment of the harsh living conditions of the miners. A long tradition also boasts the Festa dell'innamorata, during which traces the legend of unfortunate love, hampered by the different social backgrounds of two lovers, Lorenzo and Maria.
