THE TERRITORY DESIGNED BY LEONARDO DA VINCI
Calcinaia, medieval village, located at the foot of the River Arno which once crossed the Valdera from Pisa to Florence. Always been the subject of attention on the part of the ancient Tuscan families as an important commercial hub, was the Grand Duchy mediceo di Cosimo I who in 1555 engaged Leonardo da Vinci for the construction of maps useful to plumbing of this particular area.
Partly redesigned and partially modified, Calcinaia became agricultural vocation which led soon to a rich production of vegetables and cereals. In addition, he dusted off its ancient origins of place dedicated to creation of crockery in glass by creating in the eighteenth century a glazed pottery kiln work, whose creations can be discovered by visiting the Museo delle Ceramiche .
Traditions
The pottery glazing technique invented by Andrea della Robbia, is the oldest tradition of Calcinaia. In the village you can find shops that still maintain a passion for this art Tuscany.
Typical products
Calcinaia according to perfection the taste for good food and the historical events. It was as Rivivi il Passato, a party in which the three districts of the country in medieval costumes, parade throughout the evening proposing to crafts and local cuisine. These include the typical sweet Nozza Calcinaia, egg and flour, enriched by notes of aniseed and a few drops of liquor Rosolio.
