THE GOOD TUSCAN FOOD AND HANDICRAFT CULTURE
Buti is a village situated at the foot of the small mountain range of Monte Pisano, in the hinterland of the Valdera. With a strong agricultural vocation, Buti weaves their stories with Tuscan in medieval wars between Florence, Pisa and Lucca. The many castles built were destroyed and today remain visitable only Castel di Nocco and Castel Tonini.
Among the most interesting, the Villa Medicea, built in the 16th century. The building wanted by the Medici family preserves frescoes, a garden with fountains and statues and a mysterious cave passageway in case of escape. The territory also the Nature Reserve of Monte Serra, natural park with a rich flora and fauna.
Traditions
The most important event is the Palio di Buti, one of the oldest in Italy together with that of Siena. The race that dates back to the 17th century is a race between jockeys representing districts that has divided the country.
Buti is also devoted to crafts, with the Tradizione del Cesto which is carried out by local craftsmen who hand down processing for generations. The techniques of interweaving mingle to the treatment of small branches of chestnut. The latter, collected and cared for until they reach the ideal softness to be handled, they will end up being unique handicrafts and authentic works of art.
Typical products
The area of the Valdera offers the opportunity to enjoy many of the typical products of the territory. Two to try: the "trippa alla butense", a bush with sauce enriched with minced meat or bacon and "Buti's beans".
