One of the most frequented Spas in Europe, since 15th century, those of Bagni di Lucca have always received particular attention from medieval nobles that recommended for beneficial effects. Located near the ancient Via Francigena, the Spa became a place of pilgrimage, even among the most needy and poor people who needed assistance. The Republic of Lucca, who had control over the site, offered regularly to these persons a meal and a curative bath in their waters creating a local tradition.

Traditions
The local traditions are linked to the presence of the baths. From the medieval healing baths, over time, developed the popular custom of Bagno di San Giovanni: a dip in the springs of 38° C to pray to the Saint.
