KNIGHTS AND PILGRIMS
Altopascio is located in the famous Via Francigena, pilgrimage to Rome. Because of its location, the history of the place is intertwined with that of Cavalieri del Tau and with the history of the Ospitale (old hospital), place arose to give help to travellers. The religious order was carrying out assistance activities in the hospital and upkeep of the via Francigena. After some heavy defeats, Altopascio won sieges of Florence before crossing a period of economic difficulty, from which emerged thanks to flourishing agriculture.
Traditions
The Torre Campanaria di Altopascio is building that no longer binds to the traditions of the place. The Bell and the fire pit that was lit inside in remembrance of a girl, has become the symbol of the meeting. A real compass for the city.
Altopascio boasts a long tradition of craftsmanship. Pottery made with a rigorous craftsmanship have made famous the art of pottery in the area.
Typical products
The olive oil of which the territory of Lucca is one of the largest producers you can taste in dining in the city. At Altopascio are also produced the main DOC wines from the Colline di Montecarlo, Porcari and Colline Lucchesi to accompany meat dishes of the Tuscan tradition.
