The Abetone was founded in 1766, the year when work began on the construction of a connecting road between the Gran Ducato di Toscana and the Ducato di Modena, to the Apennines. During the works, the enormous size of a fir tree from never before seen roused the six hundred men at work, they decided to rename the place "Passo dell'Abetone".
